APS film, winter of 1998. The empty road. I’m outside a village somewhere, and the car that you can barely make out in this photo was my mode of conveyance during my travels that winter. It was a Dacia 1310, an automobile designed during Communist times. Its engine used technology from the 1960s, it didn’t start when it was cold, still had a choke, an antique gear shifter, and poor brakes. But with some coddling, it managed to get me from point A to point B. Did I mention it had no AC, only a flap you’d close and open to let in heat from the engine?
