The promise of something better

The wonderful thing about using a fast lens is that you can get photos like this in low light. Sure, the depth of field may be thin because the aperture is maxed out, but it’s very liberating to be able to walk around and take handheld photos without having to do long exposures on a tripod.

  1. Well, the f/1.8 *is* an EF lens, so you’d be shooting at 50mm with the 5D. That said, the f/1.8 is no investment, to be sure!

My self-serving advice? Just pull the trigger, buy the f/1.2, and let me shoot for an afternoon when we finally meet up 🙂

  2. Hey Keith, I read that post of yours in my feed reader earlier today. 🙂

I’m looking to get a 50mm lens for my 5D, but I’m a bit limited in my choices by the full sensor. Not sure yet whether to go for the f/1.4 or f/1.2L. Huge difference in price, but I’m making a long-term investment. If I had a smaller sensor, I’d seriously consider the f/1.8, it’s so tempting at that price!

  3. It is indeed nice to be able to shoot sans tripod or flash–a liberating photographic experience. I recently picked up (and briefly reviewed) Canon’s 50mm f/1.8. It’s small, lightweight, very inexpensive, and takes terrific shots indoors and in low light. It’s no 24mm prime, but at $70 delivered, it’s a toy that every Canon SLR owner should pick up and abuse!
