Interesting sports

I played rugby in college for about two seasons. It was enough play time for me to break my nose and tear my right ACL, necessitating surgery… Would I play it again? Absolutely not. Rugby is a dangerous sport, and I think only certain people can play it — the ones built for it. I’m not one of them. Although I don’t even watch it anymore, I did enjoy this short clip of the NZ All Blacks vs. Tonga. They both engage in a little Maori Haka intimidation, and it’s fun to see.

Roger Federer vs. Andy Roddick. One of the most awesome tennis plays I’ve ever seen:

This is an amazingly coreographed kung-fu fight scene. The two teammates are within inches of impaling each other with their lances. This sort of thing is very dangerous, so please don’t try it at home.

Top Gear got their hands on a Bugatti Veyron and maxed it out at its advertised limit of 252 mph (407 kmh). Very, very cool, and I think my eyes may have gotten a little misty toward the end. 🙂

Sepak Takraw is an Asian sport that’s best described as volleyball with your feet. Some amazing jumps take place here.

I believe the name of this Asian acrobatic team is Butterfly Lovers. Their name isn’t that impressive, but their act sure is! Watch it and be amazed at their skill.

Finding inspiration

I think these following videos are wonderfully inspirational. We all know about Michael J. Fox’s fight with Parkinson’s Disease. What we may not know is that he’s a very gracious person, and a real inspiration to others. Watch this segment of an interview with Katie Couric, and you’ll see what I mean. I also wrote about Michael in this post, back in October of 2006.

This second video is the historic 1938 match race between Seabiscuit and War Admiral. It shows what you can accomplish when you have faith in someone, even in an aging horse that was considered useless.

Here is Mr. Roger’s testimony before the US Senate in 1969, back when President Nixon wanted to cut the funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which aired Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.

When Reynaldo Ojeda lost his entire left leg, he didn’t let it stop him from becoming a professional salsa dancer. Watch this video of him and his dancing partner, Claudia Lopez, and be inspired.

Future by Design is a trailer for a movie that talks about Jacque Fresco, a modern day futurist and inventor.

During severe flooding in Mozambique, a dog and a monkey bonded, and remained inseparable afterwards. The dog apparently even fought to defend his little friend from other dogs. Wait till you see the droopy-eyed expressions on the two animals’ faces. You’ll think it’s the cutest thing.

Funny animal videos

This monkey’s got a death wish:

I’d always read about dirty-talking parrots in books, so it’s fun to hear one live. Beware though, this one’s NSFW:

A walrus does situps. Just look at that blubber flex:

Have you ever seen a baby pygmy goat suckle from a bottle? You should, it’s a treat:

Where can you find really cute chipmunks? Under your MacBook, apparently:

Don’t anger your sheep:

You have to see this baby duck feeding the koi fish:

Documentary video clips

I’ve been saving a few documentary clips from YouTube, and wanted to share them with you. The first, included below, is a glimpse into the world of prescription drug marketing, and it’s a trailer for a movie called “Side Effects”.

Have you heard of Lake Peigneur? It disappeared into an underground salt mine (along with part of a town nearby) in 1980, when an above-ground drilling operation went horribly wrong.

There’s a revolution going around, and it’s called the Internet. Have you heard of it?

This one’s been making the rounds on blogs and sites lately. It’s called “Did you know?”, created by Karl Fisch to help explain what’s going on with the Internet to his local school board.

If you’ve never been taught to Duck and Cover, c’mon, you gotta learn! Just do what Bert the Turtle does. He’s smart!

This one will gross you out (Ligia told me never to show her videos like this… 🙂 ). It’s called “We are not alone”.

What is this Web 2.0 stuff? Michael Wesch put together a great video that explains it in under 5 minutes. You’ve probably only seen the Beta versions of this video if you’ve seen it before. This is the final version. Yup, he did the unthinkable and took it out of Beta. No Gamma, he went straight to final release! 🙂

Drunk animals

When we’re drunk, we’re no different from them, and we become someone else’s laughing stock. Something to keep in mind…
