Here is Dieter Rams, one of the giants of industrial design.
I love the man’s approach to design and his clear avoidance of planned obsolescence. He is a great example of standing for something that you believe in and then changing the world because of your stance. Wonderful.
You may also want to read through his speech on design, given in 1976, the year I was born.
If you like and buy quality leather shoes (over $100 or more), and if after you’ve worn them for some time, they need repairs (sole or heel repairs or restitching) don’t throw them away. Find and use the services of a good cobbler (a shoe repairman) to breathe new life into them.
A cobbler repairs shoes. A great cobbler can make old shoes look new again and can even repair a shoe’s sole so well that you’d never know it was replaced. Good cobblers are few and far between, but they’re the only ones that can help you, so it’s worth it to find them.

You know how you get an urge every once in a while to grab your macro lens and go nuts photographing things? Well, this was one of those evenings when the macro bug bit me. It’s stuff I found in our home, way back in 2006. Enjoy!
We were at Tess Auto in Ghimbav (near Brasov) for service to our car recently, and we saw this beautiful antique Audi on display in the showroom. The car was so old the logo still said “Auto Union” across the four circles.
They sure don’t make cars with these designs any more. About the only company still around who makes such beautiful cars is Morgan.
I realize these designs aren’t aerodynamically efficient and they aren’t meant for high speeds. It’s also possible that the drag coefficient may be higher, meaning fuel efficiency could be better. But cars like these had something modern cars can never have: life — an organic feeling to the design which gave them life and draws our eyes to this day.
These two exotic Bizzarrini sports cars were filmed at the same time as the Lamborghini LM002 SUV, at Funktion Auto, with their permission.
They’re really rare and they cost a lot of money. Back in 2008, when I filmed them, I think this 5300 GT cost about $1 million and the price has likely gone up since.
This 5300 Strada was also up for sale at the time, at around $500,000.
