Thinking of colder times

We’ve been hit by a serious heat wave during the past few weeks, with very little rain and ridiculously high temperatures (not normal for Southern Transilvania, where summers used to be a balmy 25-27 degrees Celsius when I was a kid). So I started to think fondly of colder times and gladly contemplated freezing weather — anything to escape the heat.

The photos were taken in Grosvenor Park.

An idyllic Winter

We’re getting clear signs that winter’s winding down, but it’s not going away without a fight. Where we live these days (Romania), meteorology reports say one more snowstorm is headed our way today, accompanied by strong winds (up to 60 km/h).

If only all winter days would look like they do in these photos, I wouldn’t mind all the various other things that make living in winter a chore… If only winter would live up to its unwritten contract between us and it, and deliver a white Christmas and a snowtastic New Year, every year, I think we’d all be happy, right?

The snowfall in question here started in the evening, with thick, fluffy flakes that started to fall down faster and faster, piling on all trees, as you see above and below.

By morning, our surroundings looked like this.

Because we lived in DC at the time, that meant that by the 2nd or 3rd day after the snowfall, the snow was gone. Winter isn’t winter without snow, gosh darn it… I’m thinking of taking up a list of signatures and sending a petition to Old Man Winter about this very thing. Anyone else want to sign on? 😉

Winter in Poiana Brasov and Brasov

Ligia and I got to spend a bit of time in Poiana Brasov recently. Following are a few photos I took as we visited the mountain resort after some significant snowfall. Naturally, everything was blanketed in the smooth, powdery white stuff, and the light just happened to be perfect.

Incidentally, these are some of the first photos I edited with the new Lightroom 4. Enjoy!

Compare these photos with these, taken a few months ago in the same approximate locations.

A snowy evening walk in Medias

Ligia and I went on a refreshing evening walk with friends last night, during a wonderful snowfall which lasted through the night and covered everything in about a foot of snow by morning. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and of course I took photos, lots of them.

The C&O Canal in winter

I still remember fondly one occasion back in 2005 when, after copious snowfall, we took our MINI out for a drive with our new Michelin winter tires. We lived in the DC area at the time, and those of you who live there know we only get about one serious snowfall every year, usually toward the end of January or start of February. Well, that day, we had our annual big snowfall, and we wanted to make the best of it.

We took the car out on River Drive (it runs parallel to the Potomac River) and turned onto an access road that took us downhill, toward Lock 21 of the C&O Canal. It was quite possible that we wouldn’t be able to get back up onto the main road, but we didn’t care at the time. We were thoroughly enjoying ourselves.

Our MINI handled itself beautifully thanks to the winter tires, and we drove uphill through the thick snow without a hitch. Soon we were back home, sipping on hot tea and warming ourselves after the wonderful outing. We had so much fun!
